Long Gui

Long Gui, Ph.D. is a Junior Principal Investigator at the Institute of Bio-Architecture and Bio-Interactions, Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART), where he leads a research group devoted to in situ structural biology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington and completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Washington and UT Southwestern Medical Center. Long uses cryo-electron tomography and complementary structural and cellular approaches to visualize molecular machines directly within their native cellular environments. His previous work has investigated diverse biological systems, including viral membrane fusion, cilia and flagella, lipid droplets, and the invasion machinery of apicomplexan parasites. His laboratory currently focuses on defining the molecular machines that enable medically important parasites, including Toxoplasma, Cryptosporidium, and Plasmodium, to invade and adapt to their hosts. In parallel, his group is extending cryo-ET from cultured cells to tissues and patient-derived specimens, with the broader goal of bringing in situ structural biology closer to human disease.
